Chatfield is a popular site for water and land recreation. This park lies along the South Platte River, which flows out of the mountains onto the prairie at the mouth of Waterton Canyon. Multiple bird and wildlife habitats are found throughout the park. Bird watchers will see bald eagles, American white pelicans, burrowing owls, and many more species. Deer, elk, coyotes, foxes, rabbits, prairie dogs, and numerous reptiles and amphibians are also present.

The reservoir is a popular destination for swimming, fishing, water and jet skiing, sailing, and boating, especially on warm weekends. As one of the most popular parks in the Denver area, you must plan ahead. The facility includes four campgrounds, boat rentals, a marina, and a floating restaurant. Chatfield provides 26 miles of trails, some paved, for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Horses can be rented at Chatfield Stables.
