Washington Park Loop

A few miles southeast of downtown Denver is 2.3 mile Washington Park Loop. Gentle rolling terrain around two scenic Lakes with a mix of paved and natural trail. A popular area for biking, running, walking, rollerblading and more. Dogs are welcome but must be leashed.

City Park Perimeter Loop

The City Park Perimeter Loop 3.8 mile loop is the extended Ferril Lake Loop. In addition to being lakeside, this trail extends around the perimeter of the park passing by the Denver Museum of Nature and Science among other scenic areas.

Preparation

Get a lightweight backpack to carry essentials: water, food, a backup charger for your smartphone, a blanket, and a flashlight. Protect yourself and your children from the elements with sunscreen and insect repellant. If you will be in an area with bears, keep a can of bear spray handy. Dress in layers. Nothing makes hikers, especially children new to the hobby, quite as cranky as being too cold or hot. Hiking shoes are ideal, but they are not always necessary. Any shoes with good tread and decent cushion will do for most trails. Prevent blisters by bringing extra socks in case yours gets wet. Keep an extra pair of shoes in the car to change into after the hike. Hot days, steep climbs, and stream crossings take their toll on your feet; you will appreciate the relief a change of footwear can provide.
