Rugged topography, diverse and healthy ecosystems, and abundant wildlife characterize Fishers Peak State Park, just south of Trinidad, CO. The Peak is a captivating feature in the region encompassing 19,200 acres and presides at 9,633 feet. The forests and meadows that cloak the hillsides and the ravines are complemented by the striking geological features that have given this particular landscape iconic status.

Fishers Peak Connects

Fishers Peak State Park connects grasslands to the east with foothills and mountains to the west, serving as an important corridor for wildlife movement. Providing habitat for native species like elk, mule deer, white-tailed deer, mountain lion, and black bear. The park helps maintain important connections between these species’ populations in the mountains and the prairies. Successful raptor nests, the endangered New Mexico meadow jumping mouse, and many other rare, unexpected, and unique species have been identified.

Purchased by CPW in 2020, Fishers Peak State Park is in the planning and development stages. Only a small portion of the state’s second-largest state park is open to the public. This area is called Fishers Peak Trailhead, and it models a new and exciting way for the public to hike at their newest state park. Fishers Peak Trailhead allows for limited day use while scientific inventories, planning, and development occur elsewhere.
